This charming drawing is taken from the cover of a memoir by Marino Scotti, an Italian flight instructor who was active from 1916 to 1924.
The book was published in 1929, the same year in which Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Mino Somenzi promulgated their “Aeropittura futurista” (Futurist Aeropainting) manifesto. And, indeed, this drawing appears profoundly influenced by Futurist Aeropainting.
To our eyes, it has a spiritual flavor that goes far beyond the mere celebration of motorized flight, as was often the case in the works of futurist aeropainters.
